STEP Internship

Samahang Teaching through Experience Program (STEP) is different from your “average” internship. This internship program provides students an opportunity to advance their college experience by participating in education relevant to discovering more about their identity. By discussing history and current community conditions with a small group of students, you will not only be able to learn more about yourself, but also about other individuals within the different communities in our UCLA campus.

“STEP Internship was the first introduction of what it means to belong to a community and a safe space. It gave me the foundation to explore my own Queer and Pilipino identity and it helped me understand who I am and what I truly care about.”Kevin Casasola
“STEP showed me the importance of being connected back to my roots. As a Pilipino-American, it’s easy to forget that my culture is much deeper than the bits and pieces that I have been exposed to by my mother. STEP was a gentle reminder that there’s a much more deeper history in being Pilipino-American that greatly affects and make sense of the thoughts, feelings, and experiences that I go through today that I would never have realized if it weren’t for the lessons given to me by the STEP internship.”Alannah Sanchez-Park

SPACE Internship

SPACE offers an internship component for current UCLA students who are interested in working with and for the community, focusing on the lives of Pilipino youth in high schools and working with Pilipino peers are community colleges. Come join us and build leadership skills, time management, while expanding your horizons! Meet your future best friend, your identity, your people, your community, and your family. Take this opportunity and join hands with all of us in SPACE to work side by side with the community to build a better tomorrow.

“SPACE taught me a lot about community and about the importance of education for underprivileged communities. I learned that instilling the values of education to our SPACE students and helping them access higher education will ultimately benefit the minority and underprivileged communities as a whole. Just because they are financially or opportunistically deprived does not mean that these students don’t have the knowledge, drive, or ambition to be academically successful and to possibly even be the leaders of this generation. The internship also provided a great space to delve into Pilipino history and was eye opening in terms of the struggles and successes of pioneers of the Pilipino community both inside and outside of UCLA—successes in which we can learn from and expand to other minority communities. It was also a great space to connect with students and explore the different opinions and viewpoints on Pilipino literature and stories of individual people’s family histories or journeys to UCLA. Overall, internship was such a positive experience led by passionate staff members and a space for definite growth.”Alicia Liu
I applied for SPACE internship as a freshman not knowing what to expect. The internship turned out to be a great experience. It taught me a lot about myself, my culture, and my community. I had the opportunity to interact with students that were eager to take initiative and to make the most out of their education. SPACE welcomes volunteers who are interested in working with and for the community, focusing on the lives of Filipino youth in high schools and working with Filipino peers at community colleges. Come join us and build leadership skills, time management, all the while expanding your horizons! Meet your future best friend, your identity, your people, your community, your family.Jade Tomas
